Timing your Workout-- It's Crucial !!

When is the best time to exercise for maximum WEIGHT loss? While the type of exercise, the intensity and duration is important with respect to WEIGHT loss, the time of exercise is equally as important – if not more so.

Timing your workout can be crucial. There are specific times during the day during which your body burns fat most efficiently. It has to do with your eating cycle - or more accurately with your body’s digestive cycle. The body burns more fat when you exercise on a relatively empty stomach – contrary to many claims out there that state otherwise. The longer you wait to exercise after a meal the more fat your body will burn.

Is that truth or myth?

A university researcher studied the effects of exercising on a full versus an empty stomach. A group of women participated in 2 exercise studies. In one they exercised twice before meals and in the other, after meals. Evidence showed that when the subjects exercised on an empty stomach (before meals), blood glucose levels were lower in the periods following meals and during the night, than the when they exercised on a full stomach (after meals).

This suggested that exercising before meals can help to regulate blood glucose levels almost as well as 2 popular glucose-lowering drugs.

To take it one step further, since this type of exercise method lowers blood glucose, lower amounts of glucose may translate to decreases in body fat. Remember excess glucose in the blood (from carbohydrate) may be stored as fat.

7 Steps to Lowering your Carb Intake

1. Stop Drinking Sugary Beverages

For those who drink them, sugary beverages have a lot of negatives. Most sugary drinks have very little nutritional value, and they don't do a good job of filling you up. For example, 100 calories from apple juice would leave you hungrier than if you ate 100 calories worth of an actual apple. Therefore, you may be inclined to consume more "empty calories."

2. Start Eating More Vegetables

Surprised? Don't be. People usually greatly increase the amount of vegetables they eat when they begin a low carb way of eating. My recommendation is to start doing this first. Which vegetables? Not the starchy ones, such as corn and potatoes, but the non-starchy veggies, such as greens, cauliflower, avocado, mushrooms -- in fact, most vegetables do not have much usable carbohydrate.

3. Start Eating More Fat

I can hear the cries of protest now, but hear me out! Yes, people who eat a diet that's lower in carbohydrate usually eat more fats. But believe it or not, this is a good thing. Fats fill us up, and make it less likely that we will overeat, especially in conjunction with consuming less carbohydrate (a diet that is high in carbs and fat is probably not a good idea). We need fats for our bodies to run smoothly. And there is absolutely no reason to think that adding fats to our diet is a bad thing. Even leaving the debate on saturated fats aside, you can add fats from such sources as olive oil, nuts, avocado, fatty fish, and flax seeds.

4. Make sure you are Getting Enough Protein

Check on your protein intake to be sure you are getting enough, and don't be afraid to experiment with adding more. The National Academy of Science says we can safely eat up to 35% of our diet as protein, and truth be told, protein tends to be self-limiting -- in other words, it's really hard to eat too much.

5. Go for Quality over Quantity

As you are increasing your vegetables, protein, and healthy fats, cut down on the portion sizes of your high carb foods. Did you know that in Italy people eat about a cup of al dente (slightly firm) pasta in a meal? Just because the restaurant down the street brings you a giant plate of pasta doesn't mean that's a good portion size. Half a cup of potatoes or rice is a standard serving size. Get out measuring cup and become acquainted with how much a true portion is.

At the same time, don't waste the carbs on boring or less-than-delicious food. Have a 2 x 2-inch piece of a really great cake, or a small scoop of premium ice cream. One square of really good chocolate can satisfy better than a big low-grade chocolate bar.

6. Choose Brown over White

Select brown rice instead of white rice, and whole wheat bread instead of white. Also, when possible, eat your grains whole instead of ground up into flour. Some people find a "no white diet" to be an easy way to cut back on carbs -- no potatoes, white rice, white sugar, or white flour.

7. Pull a Switcheroo

Start substituting lower carb foods for high carb counterparts. Try a high-fiber low-carb cereal. Cook some spaghetti squash instead of pasta. Have a package of nuts at the movies instead of popcorn. Try some low carb recipes to replace high carb favorites.

As you make these changes, pay attention to how you feel. You may find you need less food, or that you're dropping a few pounds. You may find yourself with more physical energy or mental focus. These are signs that cutting carbs may work for you and keep adjusting your diet until you find what helps you feel at your personal best.

  1. Chew Slower

    We don't realize how fast we tend to eat. Most of us eat hurriedly -- between errands, in the car, during a work break. It becomes such a habit, by the time we get home, we don't slow down. When you have the opportunity to eat a meal at your leisure, do just that. By chewing more slowly, your digestive process gets a chance to work properly, you will be able to savor your food, and you'll be more likely to stop eating when you feel sated.
  2. Color Me Hungry

    Did you know that certain colors may influence your appetite? For example, when eating from a red plate, you may actually eat more than if you were eating from a darker plate. The color of your kitchen may influence your eating, too. Reds, oranges and yellows as wall colors may have an appetite-stimulating effect (Ever noticed how brightly-decorated your favorite fast food eatery is?). Consider switching to cool colors like light blue or mint green.
  3. De-stress Before Dinner

    Before sitting down for your evening meal, take a moment to relax with deep breathing, listening to a favorite calming CD, or taking a leisurely walk. You will do yourself and your digestive system a favor by eating in a more relaxed state. Stress also tends to cause overeating, so chilling out before your meal will help you better know when to say when.
  4. Down Some H2O

    Skip the diet soda and drink a tall glass of cold water before your meals. Doing so may help you feel fuller and prevent overeating. Plus, drinking ice-cold water may actually give your metabolism a tiny boost.
  5. Clear the Area

    Once you are done eating, take a break in another room. The dishes can wait. Taking a moment to change gears -- such as, reading the paper or petting your dog -- will be a signal that you are absolutely done eating; sitting at the table to peruse the paper or continue a conversation may lead you to pick at leftovers or clean off your child's plate.
  6. Don't Multitask

    Make it a point to avoid doing other activities while you are eating, such as reading a magazine or watching television. You will pay little attention to portion control and you will be less likely to notice when you begin to feel full.

    Plus, eating while you are doing that activity may become habit: For example, each time you watch television, you will automatically reach for a snack. Watching your favorite show -- what could be a calorie-free treat -- could then lead to weight gain.

  7. Keep Food in its Place

    Try to eat only at your kitchen table or dining table. You will eat less -- and less often -- if you do not allow yourself to take food into the rest of the house, such as the living area or bedroom.
  8. Downsize Your Dishes

    Using a smaller plate really can help you eat less. A study proved that even nutrition experts consumed more food when they ate from larger dishes and used oversized serving utensils. If they didn't notice they were eating more, how will the rest of us? Try using a salad plate for your dinner plate and your portions may downsize, too.
  9. Soup and Salad for Starters

    Enjoy a small bowl of broth-based soup or a veggie-filled salad before your largest meal (typically dinner). If you are particularly hungry, try both. Soup will take a while to eat, which will allow it time to take the edge off your appetite; fiber-rich vegetables are naturally filling and will help you eat less later on.
  10. Keep Seconds Out of Sight

    Even if you know you are probably going to eat two servings of a particular food -- such as bread -- start out by putting only one slice on your plate. If you have to stop and think before you go back and get that second helping, you will be more likely to consider doing without it. If it is already sitting on your plate, it's most likely a done deal.

Fat Loss

Here I am,on the weight loss plateau. Eating all the right things, getting lots of exercise. But still can't get below the weight where I am. Fat loss is what I need . Just about 10 more pounds will do it. Time to change the routine. Bump up the exercise routine a bit. Change it around. I found a diet plan that is what I think will do the trick. I have always struggled to keep my weight in an average range. Most of the time I was in the overweight range but only once did I get really overweight; fat, in fact !!! That was 5 years ago.
